Vale Ron Cook

🌟 In loving memory of Ron Cook 🌟

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ron Cook, a remarkable individual who played an instrumental role in the establishment of the Southern Peninsula Basketball Association (SPBA) back in the 1960s. While many may be unfamiliar with his significant contributions, it is essential to recognize the immense impact Ron had on shaping the basketball community in our region.

Ron, a beloved local teacher, was there from the very beginning when the Peninsula’s first basketball court was unveiled—a humble cowshed located in a muddy paddock at the Red Hill Showgrounds. In those early days, lines were marked on the cement court to accommodate various sports like badminton, basketball, and netball. Remarkably, during the annual Red Hill Show, the court area was even transformed into a display area for farm animals, causing a temporary halt to competitions.

Devoted to the sport, Ron tirelessly dedicated several evenings a week to referee games, often single-handedly. As there was no junior competition at the time, he would bring his young sons along to complete his own men’s team. Ron took on numerous responsibilities to ensure the smooth functioning of the association—he swept the courts, organized tournaments for younger players who participated in senior competitions, worked on fixtures, arranged for referees, and served on committees. He even answered countless phone calls at home, providing game information to players who had misplaced their fixture sheets in an era devoid of internet convenience. Despite the occasional annoyance, Ron consistently answered the phone with unwavering good nature.

As the years progressed, Ron’s dedication to basketball became a family affair. His wife, Lyn, and daughter, Kim, also became involved as referees, actively contributing to the Southern Peninsula basketball community through playing and officiating. Together, they formed an inseparable bond with the sport and the association.

In addition to his on-court endeavours, Ron was instrumental in organizing the SPBA’s annual ball and presentation night. This memorable event featured dinner, dancing, and award presentations. Ron played a pivotal role in setting up and decorating the venue for these cherished occasions.

Tragically, Ron and Lyn experienced the heartbreaking loss of their son Mitchell in 1987. Following his retirement from teaching, Ron continued to contribute to the community, working alongside his sister-in-law, Marie, at Snowballs Flowers, where he diligently delivered flowers for many years.

Ron was a good-hearted, kind man who selflessly devoted his time and energy to the growth and success of SPBA. His passion for basketball permeated every aspect of his life, and without individuals like him, the sport on the Peninsula would not be what it is today.

As we bid farewell to Ron Cook, we extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Lyn, daughter Kim, son Troy, and their families. We express our heartfelt gratitude for Ron’s invaluable contributions to the Southern Peninsula Basketball Association. May his legacy inspire us to continue fostering the spirit of community and sportsmanship that he so wholeheartedly embraced.

Rest in peace, Ron Cook. You will be dearly missed, but your impact will forever resonate within the halls of SPBA.

Ron’s funeral is at Rosebud Funerals on Wednesday 26 July at 12pm.
